Obituary

Mr. Thomas “Tom” MacConnell IV died from complications due to Parkinson’s disease on September 19, 2024 in Brandon, FL, at the age of 80.

Tom is survived by his wife, Sharon MacConnell; daughters and sons-in-law Lindsay MacConnell and Jonathan Cestero of St. Petersburg, FL, Kimberly and Gregorio Leong of Fairfax, VA; granddaughter Cassandra Leong of Falls Church, VA; and brother, John L. MacConnell of Tampa, FL. He is preceded in death by his father Col. (ret.) Thomas MacConnell III and his mother Ruth Gates MacConnell of Clearwater Beach, FL.

Tom was born on June 23, 1944 in Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1971 with a degree in Psychology. In 1977 he married Sharon Oldfield MacConnell, whom he met in California. After moving to Bradenton and later Riverview, FL, Tom began working for Hillsborough County Public Schools as a 5th Grade teacher. Over 47 years, the couple raised two children. His daughters remember him as a good listener with an infectious laugh.

Tom was accomplished at teaching and perfecting his golf swing, and he often spent weekends working in his cabin in Cleveland, Georgia. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed his children, grandchild and his dogs Luke, Nutmeg, Anna, Quinn, Starbucks, and Chelsey. Tom was a passionate fan of University of Maryland basketball and the San Francisco 49ers. In retirement he was a dedicated blood donor and tutor.
