Obituary
Patricia Evon Goodwin aka Mommy,
Pat Lil Pat, Pa-Aeee, Numisn Nim and Skim, passed away peacefully in the arms
of her daughter on Sunday August 4, 2024 at the age of 75.
Patricia is survived by her
daughter, Jamila, sisters Cheryl, Gwen, Jackie and Camille, as well as niece
Shannen Porter, grate-niece and nephnew Ariya and Amari Breland, niece Tracy
Prepetit, and God Sister Francinia Williams.
Preceded in death by her parents,
Patricia was born on May 27, 1949 in Pittsburg, PA. to Patricia Q. Goodwin and
William G. Goodwin. The family moved to
New York in 1963 and Patricia graduated from Music and Art Highschool in 1967.
During this time, Patricia and
all 4 of her sisters were Baptized members of Community Baptist Church in
Queens, New York and Patricia began her long standing journey as a church
musician playing the piano and organ for Community Baptist and at various
occasions.
She also went on to pursue a
Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry with
plans of pursuing a medical career, and continued her education through a
Masters Internship Program where she earned her Masters degree in Secondary
Science Education. It was there that she
discovered her passion for teaching. It
was also at the end of that time, she welcomed her daughter Jamila Mosi Goodwin
on November 14, 1975. Pat and Jamila
(Jam) eventually relocated to Delaware where she secured her first full time
teaching position, however, she found that Delaware was not the right fit so
she decided to relocate the family to Maryland where she taught 8th grade science in Prince Georges County, Maryland and she and Jamila attended 1st Baptist Church of Cherry Hill until they ultimately moved to Florida in August
of 1990. At that time, Patricia
interviewed for and secured a teaching position at Booker Middle School in
Sarasota County, Florida. She also then resumed
her duties as a church musician for New Smyrna Full Gospel Baptist Church, now
known as Thryve Church.
Patricia continued her teaching
career for 26 additional years here in Florida, braving the traffic and
traveling the interstate from Brandon to Sarasota daily until her retirement in
2016. After Pat retired, she assumed
full time care of her mother with the help or her sisters, until their mother’s
passing in 2020.
During her free time, she loved to immerse herself in God’s word, following the online Ministry of Ever Increasing
Faith, tend to her plants as well as keeping active with daily walks.
Patricia truly walked a life of
faith and service to God, and in her final months, she and our entire family
are eternally gratefully for the loving care of her cousins Jerry and Monica
Montgomery, Carole Montgomery and Elizabeth (Becky) Joseph. She also leaves to
cherish her memory a host of extended family including her beloved uncle,
Joseph Quinerly and a long list of lifelong friends and former students. We are
exceedingly grateful for the love and support of everyone who has reached out,
uplifted her in prayer, sent cards and offered support.
Although she is gone from this
earth, without question, she is now PRESENT WITH THE LORD!!!
