Most children when in a challenging situation, would say, I’ll tell my Daddy, not us!
me, Brenda, Susie and Craig, we said, I’ll tell my mama. Suddenly the challenge (s)
dispersed. Nobody messed with our Mama
I remember my mama telling all of us a story about my sister Brenda. It was on a
Saturday morning in mid Spring in early 1960’s, Mama dressed Brenda up in a
pretty dress and rolled her hair into golden locks hanging from each side of her
face. As they were walking out of Woolworths onto Elm Street, there was a woman
that came up to mama and she said, “My what a pretty little girl”, I could just take
her home with me. Mama said as soon as that lady said that she scooped Brenda up
and walked away as quick as she could. Later mama said she was afraid the woman
was going to kidnap Brenda. Mama held onto Brenda for the rest of the day saying
to herself, she would never let go! And to this day, She never did!

Just prior to Susie being born in February1957, Brenda had a bunch of baby dolls.
Every one of them was named Susie. So, when Cheryl (Susie) was born, she was
called Susie for the next 60 plus years.
One year while living at 1405 Wood Briar, it was a Sunday afternoon, I was teaching
Susie how to ride a bike. She did well on her own until at the very end, she fell off
the bike and scratched her nose and face. The very next day, the school pictures
were taken. Susie cried, Mama held her in her arms and said, it would be all right.
Susie, still crying, asked, what about the school picture? Mama said with great
confidence and comforted Susie saying again, it will be all right. To this very day, we
look at that 8 and 1/2 by 11and remember it well. We loved you then Susie and we
love you now.

In was November 15th, 1968, and it was a Friday. I was working at Sears Warehouse
on Lawndale Drive for the busy Christmas shipping, Mama came to pick me up from
work in a 1968 Mustang, Moss Green with Camel Leather interior and a 289 engine.
My mama bought it for me for graduation. I worked the day shift. When we took a
right out of the Sears parking lot, at the merge of Lawndale and Battleground. We
hit the railroad track. It was not a soft landing. The car went left to right again and
again. I looked over at Mama and said, that was rough. Mama placed her hand on
her belly and said, yea I think the baby felt it. Well, sure enough, the baby did feel
it. 4 hours and 22 minutes later, a little bundle of joy which we all loved and spoiled
rotten, came Alan Craig Tuttle. And we still love him, 56 years, 1 month and 11 days
later.

There would not be enough time today to share with you the wonderful life
experiences with our Mama. Mama chopped cotton in Haw Branch NC, (each time I
drive by, I picture my mama in the fields) and she told us it was the hardest work
she ever did. Mama took us on a vacation to the Warship North Carolina in
Wilmington, and she enjoyed Flounder gigging, which mama did better than
anybody, we visited Carowinds and saw Tanya Tucker as she was starting her
career, My mama could always represent the family with great flair and added a
respectful environment on so many occasions, reunions, weddings, during grief,
holidays and even attending an inauguration. My Mother was
comfortable in a room full of politicians, millionaires and common folks, just as she
taught me Brenda, Susie and Craig all to be. She always stood proud and…….
Today, we are each here to celebrate a beautiful, happy fulfilled life.
