Obituary
George Amis Langham went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, September 28.
He was preceded in death by wife Mary Lou Langham, the mother of his children, Carolyn Langham Conner and Joyce Langham.
He is survived by his wife Unni Barnes Langham, whom he married November 5, 2005, his daughter Carolyn Langham Conner, husband Dunaway of Anniston, daughter Joyce Langham of Birmingham, grandchildren Chris Conner and wife Shannon of Anniston, Colin Conner and wife Wendy of Hoover, great grandchildren Claire Conner Smith and husband Rex of Richmond, VA, Alex Conner of Anniston, step daughter Tinnie Barnes Phillips and husband Bob of Lincoln, stepson Joseph E Barnes, Jr. and wife Jennifer of New York, 6 step grandchildren: Stephanie, husband James, Kari, Eva, husband Mark , Anja, Marissa, and Joshua, 3 step great grandchildren: Nolan, Fox, and Rivers.
George was born in Maburn, AR. He married Mary Lou Allison in1940. He served in the U.S Army Artillery from 1944 to 1946, the end of the war, and earned the rank of Staff Sargent. He acquired three medals in his service. He settled in Memphis, TN, and worked in the engineering department, International Harvester.. His great love was flying. He earned his pilot’s license at age 16. He co-owned several different planes in his life. He earned instructor’s license, and instrument rating, and gave flying lessons privately. He enjoyed crop dusting on weekends and in his vacation times as a source of added income. He also flew gliders, tried hang gliding, and flew ultra-lite planes. He built and flew radio-controlled airplanes for most of his life, and was the president of a model airplane flying club. Other hobbies included motorcycles, bicycles, tennis, boating and fishing. George gave tennis lessons to youths, strung racquets, and rode his bike when he was well into his sixties, and continued to ride bikes in his eighties. When George retired from International Harvester in 1982, he and Mary Lou moved from Memphis to Anniston to be closer to their daughter, and shortly thereafter built a house on Logan Martin Lake. They joined Cropwell Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a deacon. George loved his Lord, his family and his church. He was an avid do-it-your-self-er, loved working with his hands, and had a diversity of hobbies all his life. The wife of his children, Mary Lou, died in 1998. But the Lord blessed him with a second love. He met Unni Barnes at Cropwell Baptist Church, and several years later they married and built a country home in Lincoln, AL., where they lived for 19 years until he entered the VA Home in Pell City, AL. A special thank you to the staff of the VA Home for the love and care they gave him in his last days.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Anniston for family and friends, Rev. Dunaway Conner, officiating.
