Obituary
Elizabeth Frances (Carter) Robertson, 80, of Lexington, Alabama, left this earth on June 7, 2024 after a courageous fight with cancer. She gained her wings while at home surrounded by her family.
Elizabeth was born on September 10, 1943, in Memphis, Tennessee to James and Tomizeen (Brown) Carter. They preceded her in death as well as her two sisters and two brothers.
After her graduation from Central High School in Memphis, TN, she moved with her family to Pasadena, California where Elizabeth attended Pasadena City College and then trained at the City of Hope Hospital to be an x-ray technician. She enlisted in the US Army in September 1964 and attended basic training at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama. When she finished her training, she was sent to Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia. Before she left for her new assignment, she told her drill sergeant that she was “never coming back to Alabama.” Never say never! While working at the military hospital in Arlington, a handsome soldier caught her eye. She thought Specialist Harold (Pete) Robertson was really cute and hoped to catch his attention. When she finally got a date arranged, he stood her up the first time. But she gave him a second chance, and after a short courtship, they were married on April 8, 1967 at the First Baptist Church of Pasadena, CA. Their honeymoon consisted of driving back across country from Pasadena to the base in Virginia where they enjoyed being newlyweds. After finishing their enlistments, Harold and Elizabeth retired to Lexington Alabama (his hometown) to begin life after the army. They most recently celebrated 57 years together. They raised three daughters: Michelle (Kevin) Adams of Florence Alabama; Kelly (Stephen) Armstrong of Athens Alabama; and Heather (James) Taylor of Trenton Tennessee. They were blessed with the joy of being a grandparent six times: Andrew Reilly Armstrong, Elizabeth Adams Graham (Sean), Rachel Adams Stovall (Slater), Reese Houston Armstrong, Reid Robertson Adams, and Mary Margaret Armstrong. Most recently they have experienced the joy of great grandchildren: Beckett Daniel Stovall, Oliver Clayton Graham, and Sutton Elizabeth Stovall.
Elizabeth was an active member of Atlas Church of Christ up until her illness last October. She loved going to the beach and eating fried shrimp. Elizabeth was an active member of the American Legion Post 11, having served as Senior vice commander. She loved to read and was part of the Lexington library board. She also enjoyed substitute teaching at Rogers High School. “Mrs Rob” as she was known, was loved by many students during the past twenty years. Elizabeth and Harold loved to cruise. Together, they went on 45 cruises traveling extensively through the Caribbean and to Alaska (twice!). They took their children and grandchildren on several of those cruises.
The family would like to thank special friends, Laura Biffle and Jane Robinson; special sister-in-law, Judy Mills; the nurses at Clearview Cancer Center; and Amedisys Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Elizabeth’s memory to Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, St Jude Children’s Hospital, or Mars Hill Bible School.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Atlas Church of Christ with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 PM. Burial with full military honors will follow at Pettus Cemetery. Elkins East Chapel is assisting the family.
While we as her family are heartbroken at our loss, we also rejoice in the knowledge that our mom and nana is at peace and home with our Lord.
