Obituary

Charles Thomas Williams was born on October 27, 1945 in Alexandria, Louisiana to Morgan and Jimmie Faye Williams. He died on June 6, 2024 in Birmingham, Alabama. Charles spent his early years in Gadsden and Trussville in Alabama. After attending Columbia Military Academy for much of high school, he graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School in 1964. Charles served in the United States Air Force and was a proud veteran. He graduated from Auburn University in 1970 and enjoyed cheering on the Auburn Tigers.

During his career, Charles worked in several transportation positions. He retired as Distribution Supervisor with the Chemicals Division of Vulcan Materials Company. Charles’ hobby as a woodworker brought him much enjoyment and lasting friendships. He was a member of the Woodworkers Guild of Alabama. Charles was an avid reader; the Hoover Public Library has lost one of its best patrons. Charles was a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church where he spent time in worship, Bible study, and formed lasting friendships.

On May 29, 1976, Charles married his wife, Connie. Their married life was spent in Muscle Shoals, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Trussville, and Hoover. Charles and Connie recently celebrated their 48th anniversary with a special meal in the CICU at Grandview Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Hannah Smith. He is survived by his wife, Connie; their son, Dr. John Childs of San Antonio, Texas; and daughter, Julie Buford (Jonathan) of Hoover. Other survivors are his brother, Judge Bruce Williams (Janis); grandchildren Emma Watkins (Connor), Mattie Buford, Lauren Childs, Mary Buford, Luke Childs, Logan Childs, Lily Childs; and great-grandchildren, Adelaide and Baker Watkins.

A service to celebrate Charles’ life will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, June 9 at Shades Crest Baptist Church, 452 Park Avenue in Hoover. There will be no visitation prior to the service; everyone is invited to a reception in the fellowship hall following the service.

The family requests no flowers; memorial donations may be made to the Found Faithful Fund at Shades Crest Baptist Church, 452 Park Avenue, Hoover, Alabama
