Obituary
Mrs. Barbara Jean Cox, Indianapolis, the beloved matriarch of her family, peacefully passed away on the early evening of Saturday, September 21, 2024, surrounded by five generations of her loving family. She was 102 years old.
Barbara, fondly known as "Barb," was born March 3, 1922, in Seymour, Indiana, to the late Leonard H. and Lillian (Kasting) Henderson, the only daughter in a family of five brothers.
After attending Southport High School, she began her career at Haag Drugs, and later served as a cosmetics consultant for the William H. Block Company for 12 years.
Barb was a devoted member of the Indian Creek Christian Church (The Creek), where she participated in the crochet class and regularly attended Sunday School. She was also a committed volunteer at Franciscan Health, dedicating over 22 years of service before retiring. Family was the center of her world, and she cherished every opportunity to gather with her loved ones. Barb was known for her love of shopping and visiting with her neighbors, a testament to her warm, friendly spirit.
She is survived by her two daughters, Gloria Buras and Debbie (Dan) Caperton; her step-children, Bill (Sally) Cox and Debbie (Steve) Riley; her grandchildren, Terry (George) Lancaster, Jerry (Debbie) Rushton, Edward (Rowena) Caperton and Aaron (Jodi) Caperton; her great-grandchildren, Bryan (Laiken) Kirk, Krysta Kirk, Kyle (Briana) Kirk, Kayla (Jarrod) Smith, Jared (Lindsey) Rushton, Joshua (Kat) Rushton, Jacob (Maya) Rushton, Gracie Caperton, Grant Caperton, Will Caperton, Tyler Caperton, Lauryn Caperton and Max Caperton; her great-great-grandchildren, Blake, Jacob, Greyson, Jacksyn, Jase, Paxton, Peyton and Brylee and her great-great-great-grandchildren, Elaine, Maverick, and Chance. Barb is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who all held a special place in her heart.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward J. Roller, her second husband, Dale Cox, as well as her five brothers.
A memorial service to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at 12:00 PM, Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Greenwood, Indiana. She will be laid to rest beside her first husband, Edward, at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
For those choosing to make a memorial contribution in Barb’s memory, the family has suggested those be offered to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization dear to Barb’s heart.
