Alton 'Brooks' McComas, Jr.

March 24th, 1932 - December 1st, 2024

Obituary

Mr. Alton ‘Brooks’ McComas, Jr., Greenwood, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2024. He was 92. Born March 24, 1932 in Jeffersonville, Indiana, he was the son of the late Alton Brooks and Anna Mae (Emery) McComas, Sr.
Brooks graduated from Jeffersonville High School and attended Butler University on a basketball scholarship. He married his high school sweetheart, Henrietta ‘Rietta’ Munger and they had been married almost 72 years until her passing. Brooks enjoyed a 41 year career in sales and retired as the Great Lakes Region sales broker with President Baking Company.
Brooks was an active participant in youth sports, coaching little baseball and umpiring. He was also a high school basketball referee. He enjoyed golfing, especially at Dye’s Walk Country Club, square/round dancing, bowling and boating - spending days on their houseboat, the ‘Brooketta’. Mostly, he cherished the time he spent with his family, who affectionately called him ‘Gramps’. He was the ‘Big Kahuna’ of the family swimming pool, a name given for the incredible cannonball splashes.
Brooks was a member of the Mount Olive Lutheran Church of Greenwood. His family is comforted knowing he is now with his Lord and Savior in Heaven.
Brooks is survived by his sister, Nancy Lutie Mercer; his son, Mike (Debbie) McComas; his daughter, Julie Burger; his grandchildren, Nathan (Chrissy) McComas, Kyle (Amy) McComas, Nick Burger and Jeremy (Brittney) Burger; his eight great-grandchildren, Will McComas, Sara McComas, Luke McComas, Drew McComas, Eva McComas, Lionel Burger, Arwynn Burger and Isabelle Burger as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Brooks is preceded in passing by his loving wife, Rietta; an infant son, Jerry McComas; as well as his sisters, Myra Lee Underwood and Lucille Jo Curtis.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until 11:30 am, Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 am immediately following the time of visitation at the funeral home. Pastor Jeff Alexander will be officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
For those choosing to make a memorial contribution in Brooks’ memory, the family has suggested those be offered to the Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 5171 W. Smokey Row Rd., Greenwood, IN 46143
